How to tell if moissanite is real — 6 simple tests — KValeria Jewelry
If you recently purchased a moissanite ring or are considering buying one, you may be wondering: how can I tell if my moissanite is real? It's a great question — and the good news is that there are several simple tests you can do at home to verify your stone.

At KValeria Jewelry, all of our pieces feature genuine moissanite stones set in 925 sterling silver. In this guide, we'll walk you through 6 reliable ways to tell if moissanite is real no jeweler required.

What Is Moissanite?

Moissanite is a gemstone made of silicon carbide (SiC), originally discovered in a meteorite crater in 1893 by scientist Henri Moissan. Today, nearly all moissanite used in jewelry is lab-created meaning it's grown in a controlled environment to produce stones of exceptional quality and consistency.

Moissanite is not a fake diamond it's a completely different gemstone with its own unique properties. In fact, it outperforms diamonds in several categories, including brilliance and fire (the rainbow flashes you see in sunlight).

6 Simple Tests to Tell if Moissanite is Real

1. Check the Sparkle

The most obvious sign of genuine moissanite is its extraordinary sparkle. Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamonds (2.65 vs 2.42), which means it bends light more and produces more brilliance.

When you hold a moissanite stone up to light especially sunlight — you should see rainbow-colored flashes (called fire), not just white sparkle. This rainbow effect is more intense in moissanite than in any other gemstone.

TIP: Look for multi-colored flashes, not just white. If you only see white sparkle, it may not be moissanite.

2. Look for the Double Refraction Effect

One of moissanite's most unique characteristics is its double refraction — meaning light splits into two beams as it passes through the stone. This is called birefringence.

To test this at home, use a jeweler's loupe (10x magnification) and look through the stone at the facets. In genuine moissanite, the facet edges may appear doubled or slightly blurry when viewed from certain angles.

TIP: A diamond does NOT have double refraction — so if you see this effect, it's a strong sign of moissanite.

3. Do the Hot Needle Test

Moissanite is an excellent thermal conductor — it disperses heat faster than most other gemstones, including cubic zirconia and glass.

To test this, carefully touch a heated needle to the surface of the stone for 1-2 seconds. Genuine moissanite will not be damaged by the brief heat exposure. Glass and cubic zirconia may show marks or crack under heat.

TIP: Real moissanite stays completely unaffected by heat. Always be careful when doing this test — use tongs to hold the needle.

4. Use the Fog Test

This is one of the easiest tests you can do:

  1. Hold your moissanite stone close to your mouth

  2. Breathe on it gently like you're fogging up a mirror

  3. Watch what happens

Genuine moissanite will clear up almost instantly because it disperses heat so quickly. A diamond behaves the same way. However, cubic zirconia, glass, or fake stones will stay fogged up for 2-4 seconds longer.

TIP: If the fog clears in 1-2 seconds, you likely have genuine moissanite or a diamond. If it stays cloudy, it may be a fake.

5. Check with a Moissanite Tester

The most accurate way to verify moissanite at home is with a moissanite tester — a small electronic device specifically designed to identify moissanite stones.

Regular diamond testers will also read moissanite as positive (because both are thermal conductors), so make sure to use a tester that specifically differentiates between the two. These testers are available online for around $20-50.

TIP: Look for a reading that specifically confirms MOISSANITE. A diamond tester alone is not enough get one that distinguishes between diamond and moissanite.

6. What to Look For — Summary Checklist

Here's a quick checklist of what genuine moissanite should show:

  • Brilliant rainbow sparkle (fire) in sunlight

  • Double refraction under a loupe (doubled facet edges)

  • Unaffected by brief heat exposure

  • Fog clears within 1-2 seconds

  • Passes moissanite tester

  • Very hard — 9.25 on the Mohs scale (won't scratch easily)

When in doubt, take your piece to a professional jeweler who can test it with professional equipment.

Is Moissanite Worth Buying?

Absolutely. Moissanite offers:

  • More brilliance than diamonds

  • Greater durability — 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale

  • Ethical sourcing — lab-created, conflict-free

  • Fraction of the cost — up to 90% less than diamonds of similar size
